The long uneventful days of winter swoop in right around the same time your New Year’s resolutions start to get neglected. The holiday bills start rolling in, frustrating winter weather is wreaking havoc on your social life and well your skin is dryer than the Sahara. When I lived back on the east coast, at this time of year, I struggled big time with being happy. The grey days, lack of sunshine would just kill me mood. I was happiest on my couch, in my sweatpants, in bed by 9:30. I know, I know. 9:30 is super early but I legit had no energy. The winter blues had arrived and they were ready to party. Lucky for you, I’ve compiled my five secret weapons against the winter blues that helped me survive the long, grey, New England winters.

Plan a get away

There’s no denying that having travel plans to look forward to will do wonders for your mood. From weekend getaways to weeklong adventures it does not matter the impact will be the same. Think of your favorite people, call in the troops and have an epic vacation planning session. When the winter blues pop up and smack you in the face, daydream about your trip until you find yourself in a mood suitable for public consumption.

BONUS: Can’t make a get away happen right now? That’s ok, plan a stay-cation! Explore your city. Hell, explore your apartment! I’ve had a few staycations where I never left the house. I love tropical vacations. So I’ve def had a staycation where I turned up the heat, made some rum punch, read books (fave vacation activity) and ordered takeout.

Kids have the right idea. They can play anywhere with anything. As we grow up, we become too
serious, wrapped up in the ways of the world. Play will look different for all of you. Explore activities that speak to you, that inspire you. If it can also draw on your creative side EVEN BETTER. Perhaps, it’s a kickboxing class you drag your friend to or a pottery class. Maybe you’re finally ready to take that photography class you’ve been putting on the back burner. The point is to step outside of your comfort zone and teach your brain something new. You’re confidence will grow and you’ll have something to get excited about.

Upgrade your look

Upgrade your look, upgrade your mood. During my 13 years as a hairstylist, I saw hundreds of women turn their moods around in the time span of their appointment. Our hair is our number one accessory. When we look good, we feel good. Whether it was just a blow dry or a whole makeover, it was amazing to watch women’s energy transform. In a previous post, I share my go-to style upgrades that would keep my clients looking and feeling fabulous about themselves. One of the tips you don’t even need to go to the hair salon for.

Friend Time

The people you choose to fill your life with make a huge impact on the direction and feel of your life. As the winter blues creep in, it’s so important to call in your handpicked tribe. Make spending time with these special people a priority. Who doesn’t love friend time? If the answer is “me” then it’s time to reevaluate your circle. Friend time can be spent watching your favorite shows together with a great bottle of red wine. Perhaps it’s coffee at your favorite café on a Saturday morning or dinner at your favorite restaurant with the cute bartender. No matter what, spend that time enjoying each others company laughing and sharing your lives.

Exercise

My number one winter blues eradicator is exercise. Nothing lifts your mood like the ‘feel good’ hormones released during an epic sweat session. Aerobic exercises like running and biking have been shown to increase serotonin production. Even yoga has been shown to have an impact on serotonin production. All you need is 3 hours a week or 30 minutes a day of aerobic exercises to experience the effects of serotonin and dopamine. Low serotonin is what has you on your couch, scraping the bottom of that Ben n Jerry’s container. Get up and get moving towards a better mood.

What are you going to do to combat the winter blues?
